It was quite worrisome to see open manholes on a major highway in Lagos State and one becomes more worried over the attendant dangers such open manholes pose to the lives of residents and motorists, especially those moving around at night, who may fall into it.
I was heading towards Costain from Alaka Estate inwards Stadium on Monday afternoon when I sighted four gaping holes on the major highway around Stadium in Surulere and on moving closer, I saw that they were manholes whose covers had been removed.
There is no doubt that the uncovered manholes posed serious dangers not only to motorists, but also people walking about at night, especially when the entire road is dark, as anyone can fall inside the manhole and may suffer injuries while a vehicle tyre can also be damaged if it falls inside the manhole.

I asked some people who were around the place when the manhole covers had disappeared and one of them, who gave his name as simply Akeem, disclosed that the manholes in that stretch of the road had been removed for over a month.
He added that it is not only the manholes in the Stadium area that had their covers removed, but also many of the manholes in other parts in the area including the ones at Bode Thomas, Eric Moore, among others.
He added that in many instances, they would wake up in the morning and discover the manhole covers missing.
This is therefore calling on the authorities concerned to look into the open manholes which covered had been removed before they would serious havoc not only to vehicles, but also to the people walking around.
