Russian ambassador says no alternatives exist for Ukraine to join NATO

There are no options for any country, including Ukraine, to join NATO, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko in an interview with the Zvezda television program.

“There are no workarounds for joining NATO,” he declared in a video clip of the interview posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Telegram account.

Grushko stated that any nation must go through multiple steps before joining the alliance, with the membership “action plan” being the ultimate one, when addressing Ukraine’s probable admission to NATO at a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers in Bucharest in late November.

According to Grushko, an exception was granted for Sweden and Finland because the two Nordic nations were already members of the alliance and the latest decision was purely political. However, a top Russian ambassador dismissed that as absurd.

The 30 NATO foreign ministers will convene in Romania’s capital on November 29-30 for a two-day summit.
